Proper Oral Hygeine

Proper Oral Hygiene

It’s even more imprtant while you’re in treatment

At Ovation Orthodontics, we believe that maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial during your orthodontic treatment. Patients who keep their teeth and braces clean enjoy better results and a more comfortable treatment experience.

Why Good Oral Hygiene Matters

Proper brushing and flossing while wearing braces is essential for several reasons:

  • Prevents tooth decay and gum disease that can complicate your orthodontic treatment
  • Ensures your teeth and gums stay healthy throughout the entire process
  • Guarantees that when your braces come off, your straight teeth will look and feel great

Patients who struggle with oral hygiene may require more frequent visits to their dentist for professional cleanings. Adults with a history of gum disease may benefit from seeing a periodontist during orthodontic treatment.

Recommended Daily Cleaning Routine

Follow these guidelines to maintain optimal oral health during your orthodontic journey:

Brushing

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head. Electric and sonic toothbrushes are also excellent options.
  • Apply a small amount of toothpaste to a dry brush.
  • Use circular motions and be sure to clean the gum line and around each bracket for 10 seconds on each tooth.
  • Brush your teeth after meals and snacks to prevent plaque buildup and decay.

On-the-Go Care

  • If you’ve eaten while away from home, use your interdental brush to dislodge any food caught around your braces.
  • Rinsing vigorously with water is another effective way to remove food from your braces and prevent sugar from sitting on your teeth when eating away from home.

Flossing

  • Floss your teeth carefully at least once daily.
  • Gently pull the floss under the archwire between each tooth.
  • Take care to clean around the gumline and the surfaces of each tooth.

Regular Dental Check-ups

  • We recommend scheduling a check-up with your general dentist every 6 months during orthodontic treatment.
  • Professional cleanings help remove plaque and tartar that may be difficult to reach with home care.
